Why haulage companies are high-risk
Razor-thin margins. Net margins of 2% to 5% mean a single bad debt of £20K can wipe out an entire quarter of profit. One customer default cascades into the haulier's own supply chain.
High fixed costs. Vehicle finance (£2K to £5K/month per truck), insurance (£3K to £8K/year per vehicle), fuel (£1K to £2K/week per truck), and driver wages run whether the trucks are loaded or not.
Long payment terms. Hauliers typically wait 45 to 60 days for payment from customers while paying fuel, tolls, and drivers weekly. Cash-flow insolvency is the most common failure mode.
Operator licence risk. If the Traffic Commissioner revokes or curtails the operator licence, the company cannot legally operate. Loss of licence often triggers immediate insolvency.
What to check
- Operator licence: active, correct vehicle count, no conditions or curtailments, no recent Public Inquiry
- Financial standing: £8K first vehicle + £4,500 per additional (international); accounts showing this level of available capital
- Accounts: filed on time, positive net assets, stable or growing turnover, no going concern warning
- CCJs: fuel supplier CCJs are particularly telling (they indicate the haulier cannot pay their most essential input cost)
- Director history: prior haulage insolvencies, phoenix patterns (same director, new transport company)
- Insurance: goods in transit, public liability, employer liability (all required for commercial haulage)
Red flags specific to haulage
Operator licence with conditions
Conditions imposed by the Traffic Commissioner (e.g. reduced vehicle count, maintenance requirements) indicate prior compliance failures. The company is already on thin ice.
CCJs from fuel suppliers
If a haulier cannot pay for diesel, they cannot operate. Fuel supplier CCJs are a direct cash-flow insolvency indicator. The company may be days from stopping.
Director with prior transport failures
Same person, new haulage company. The previous one entered CVL owing HMRC and fuel suppliers. The business model (undercutting on price) is the problem, not bad luck.
Rapidly growing fleet without capital
Company added 10 vehicles in 12 months but balance sheet shows minimal capital. Growth funded entirely by HP and invoice factoring. One customer loss collapses the model.
Who needs haulage credit checks
3PL subcontracting to hauliers
You have a contract with the end customer. You subcontract the physical movement. If your haulier fails mid-delivery, your customer blames you. Check every regular subcontractor.
Manufacturer extending 60-day terms
You ship £50K/month to a haulier for onward delivery. They invoice you monthly, 60 days. At any point you have £100K exposure. Is that supported by their balance sheet?
Freight forwarder vetting carriers
You need reliable carriers for international movements. A carrier that goes bust with your goods on board creates customs, insurance, and delay complications that cost multiples of the freight charge.
Shipper choosing between quotes
Three quotes: £800, £650, £500. The cheapest haulier may be undercutting because they are desperate for cash. If they fail mid-transit, your "saving" becomes a £5K problem.
